It was supposed to be close and it was. It was supposed to come down to Comeaux and Teurlings Catholic and it did. For those who felt like it was someone else's turn to win the Lafayette Parish Duals crown, though, that didn't happen.
In dramatic fashion, the 11-time defending champion Spartans overcame a six-point deficit with three matches left in the head-to-head showdown with Teurlings to capture a 37-28 win over the Rebels and eventually a perfect 6-0 showing overall for their 12th consecutive championship in this event.
"We've had some close duals with Teurlings over the years and with Northside when they were making a run," Comeaux coach Keith Bergeron said. "It was good to see. It was very close, intense matches. There was a lot of intensity and a lot of emotion and I think that helps both teams."
With the much-anticipated dual beginning at 132, the Rebels led by six points after the 106-pound match won by pin by Brock Bonin. That means the Spartans had some work to do, but it was very realistic. "We actually felt pretty good at that point because we had two of our better wrestlers coming up in Connor Stampley and Jacob Dale and then a senior in Jacoby Guillory," Bergeron said.
The team's confidence in the first two was quickly rewarded. Stampley claimed a pin in 3:59 to tie the match and Dale gave Comeaux the lead by six with a pin in 1:34.
So as long as Guillory didn't get pinned, Comeaux was going to 12-peat.
"We didn't even mention that to him," Bergeron said. "We just told him to go out and try to win the match."
The match started out slowly for Guillory, falling to a quick 4-0 deficit, but the senior responded with a 12-7 comeback win to earn three extra points for the 37-28 final.
Bergeron said Guillory was one of several unsung heroes for the Spartans in the win. At 145, Skylar Bertrand had lost to his Teurlings opponent earlier this season, but delivered a 10-2 win this time. At 160, John Robinson pinned Kynan Sonnier, who later went on to finish 5-1 on the weekend and earned Outstanding Wrestler honors for his weight division.
Then there was Aaron Langlinais at 195 in a matchup "that we didn't know who was going to win." Not only did Langlinais deliver a 13-7 win, but also finished 6-0 to earn Outstanding Wrestler honors in his weight division on the weekend.
Bergeron even gave credit to a freshman like Cole Miller, who avoided a pin to give up just four points in a 9-1 loss.
"We talk to our kids all the time that in dual matches, it's not just about winning," Bergeron said. "Sometimes it's just as important how you lose."
