While George Trygg is gone, he certainly hasn’t been forgotten.

A former state wrestling champion for East Jefferson in 1967-68, as well as coach of the 1978 team that won a state title, Trygg was inducted into the Louisiana Wrestling Hall of Fame and National Hall of Fame in 2008.

In additional to leaving his mark in the pages of history, Trygg’s legacy lives on with the annual George Trygg Invitational at Grace King High School on Friday and Saturday.

The Inviational field is comprised 31 teams, which includes many area teams, as well as some from out-of-state. St. Paul’s returns to defend its title, having scored 245 points to finish ahead of Rummel.

With many others wanting their shot at winning the title, Wolves coach Craig Kettleson knows what’s in store.  “This tournament is very rich in tradition and has been around for a while,” Kettleson said. “It’s a very strong, competitive field with some of the best wrestlers in the area. This is one that many schools look forward to each year.”

Grace King Coach Roberto Furtado has been at the school since 1999 and said he is encouraged by the reception of the event by the local and regional community.

“We have as many as 20-25 schools who will be participating this weekend from as far away as Texas and Florida,” Furtado said. “The competition level is very good and people really like this event.”

On the road: Brother Martin will hit the road this weekend as they travel to the Blackhorse Invitational in Germantown, Tenn., a trip the team looks forward to on an annual basis. The Crusaders have participated since 1998, winning 12 consecutive years until Tennessee wrestling power Christian Brothers unseated them in 2010.

The Blackhorse utilizes a duel meet format, which is different from the state championships in Louisiana.

“You have first through eighth place matches going on at the same time and there can be a major swing in point standings right to the end,” said Brother Martin coach Robbi Dauterive. “They draw from a wide area, including Alabama as well as other states.”

Upcoming schedule: Nov. 30-Dec. 1, George Trygg/Ray Gremillion Duals at Grace King; Dec. 1, Shaw-Stanley Rauch Memorial Duals; Dec. 1, Catholic High-B.R.
