Holy Cross struck quickly in a 53-16 victory at Shaw and, with the prestigious Louisiana Classics meet next weekend in Baton Rouge, it was the adrenaline boost coach Eric Desormeaux hoped the team could seize with the end of the regular season next month.

“The reason we like the dual meet style format is that the kids really feed off of each other,” Desormeaux said. “We knew starting at the middle of our line up, and some of our younger kids right there, if we didn’t lose a lot of points, that our light weights and upper weights would get out there and do everything they had to do to win the match.”

As a primer for the meet in Baton Rouge next week, Holy Cross will host the Tiger Duals, featuring some of the top teams in Division II, including Live Oak, Parkway (Shreveport), St. Louis (Lake Charles). Last week, Holy Cross defeated defending Division II champion Teurlings Catholic.

Starting with the 145-pound class, the Tigers’ David Olivier battled Shaw’s Max Chambers and came away with a 7-6 decision. With a razor-thin margin for error, every point counted.

“When I was on bottom, he was jamming my arm at the elbow and keeping me down,” Oliver said. “Right when I got up, I heard him make a noise making me thing he was tired. I exploded up and got out. He was very tough.”

Austin Doyle followed it up for Holy Cross in the 152-pound class with a 6-2 decision over Khalil Blue. That was about the time the Eagles attempted a comeback. Kody Woodson got an 11-3 decision over the Tigers’ Brice Duhe in the 160-pound class.  “Starting out, I wanted to go in and get the easy pin, but it didn’t work out that way,” Woodson said. “I tried a few different moves since he was so tough. This will do for now, but it wasn’t my best match. I know I can do better.”

In the 285-pound class, Shaw’s Jay Driggers gave Holy Cross a jolt when he pinned Jordan Showalter as the rest of the team was fired up.  “I really came out quick, although I was kind of defensive for most of the match,” Driggers said. “Then, I adapted to what he was doing and took my opportunity.”

Holy Cross responded with pins in the next five matches, including Beau Bush (106), Dylan Soileau (113), Alex Nicosia (120), Collin Guerra (126), and Nick Bonck (132).

“I knew I wanted to go for the pin, and when the light weights come up, it’s a good time to rally,” Nicosia said. “It got everyone all hyped up.”
