After a convincing 69-9 dual meet win at Hahnville, Rummel could in the process of hitting its stride with four weeks left in the regular season, leaving the team optimistic about its future.   Fueling that optimism, in part, is that the Raiders were victorious in 11 of 14 weights classes at the meet, all by virtue of pins.

One of Hahnville's few victories came in the 113-pound class as Jordan Hernandez pinned Damien Tornabene in 4:18. There was also a double forfeit in the 120-pound class.

Starting off in the 126-pound class, Matt Calcote, ranked second in the All-New Orleans area weight class rankings, began a streak of three consecutive pins for the Raiders, taking down Zachary Lewis in 34 seconds. Then, the second ranked wrestler in the 132-pound class, Rick Lacava, followed with a hard-fought pin in 2:34 over Jordan Cook. At that point, the team could sense the momentum was theirs.  “We’ve been wrestling a lot of tough out-of-state teams lately and they’ve been beating up on us,” Lacava said. “It’s a good, quick change of pace to come out and get three pins that fast, which is a big help this weekend, going into the Louisiana Classics. I get to have my rematch with Connor Campo from St. Paul’s.”

Briefly halting the three straight pins was Cameron Cambre, who edged Rummel’s Cody Mire for a 19-16 decision in the 145-pound class. From start to finish, it was a game of give and take, but neither Cambre nor Mire seemed willing to allow any mistakes.  “I used everything I had and just threw it at him,” Cambre said. “This was all about the fact that you’ve got to want it more than anyone else, and I really wanted this one. I’m going to do everything I can to place as high as I can get a state so I can stand on the podium.”

The longest match of the night took place in the 160-pound class between Rummel’s Guillermo Suarez and Josh Hebert. Battling to a deadlock after the first three periods, Suarez persevered with a pin 40 seconds into overtime.

“The way we performed this past weekend, we’re starting to turn the corner now,” Rummel coach Rod Cusachs said. “We’re starting to peak at the right time, and I’m looking forward to having a good outing this weekend in Baton Rouge.”

One of the wrestlers who seems to embody the resurgence during its run toward the postseason is Michael Darwin. After falling to Brother Martin’s Daniel Albrecht in the finals of the 170-pound weight class in the Brother Martin-Trey Culotta Tournament, he's regrouped. Against Hahnville, he pinned Joel Ramirez in 43 seconds.  “Since then, we’ve been going all out in practice at Rummel every day, working on conditioning,” Darwin said. “We needed a good showing against Hahnville to get prepared for this weekend.”
