The prep wrestling season ended in February, but recently some Louisiana wrestlers and coaches received some national recognition for their achievements.

The National Wrestling Coaches Association selected Connor Campo of St. Paul’s the Wrestler of the Year in Louisiana among its annual State Scholastic Award winners.

Campo finished the season 45-0 versus in-state and out-of-state competition and won the Division I state title in the 132-pound class. It was his second consecutive season finishing undefeated against in-state foes. He won the 126-pound state championship in 2012.

Wrestling USA Magazine selected Holy Cross’ Alex Nicosia a member of its High School All-American Honorable Mention Team. Nicosia won the 2013 Division II state title in the 120-pound class. He will graduate high school as a three-time state champion (2011, 2012, 2013) and will continue his wrestling career at the United States Merchant Marine Academy.

Team selections were made thanks to nominations from coaches, sportswriters and Wrestling USA Magazine State Editors. The national team consists of 120 Honorable Mention members, along with 13 Dream Team members, 13 Academic Team Members and 96 All-American members.

Baton Rouge-Catholic’s Brandon Luckett (Honorable Mention), who won the 2013 Division I state title in the 160-pound class, was the lone other wrestler from Louisiana that was selected as a Wrestling USA Magazine team member.

The honors continued for Holy Cross when the National Wrestling Coaches Association selected Eric DesOrmeaux the Head Coach of the Year in Louisiana after guiding the Tigers to the Division II state championship.  DesOrmeaux’s assistant, T.J. Miller, was selected the Assistant Coach of the Year in Louisiana.

“It’s an absolute honor,” DesOrmeaux said. “My coaches and team made me look good. I have a great coaching staff at Holy Cross, and the kids did a great job of listening to us. They bought into it. T.J. does a wonderful job; he earned this.”

Miller is being promoted to co-head coach next year, DesOrmeaux said.
