TIGERS TAKE DOWN RAIDERS

Holy Cross has already announced its intentions to "play-up" in classification from 4A to 5A for the 2012-2013 school year in all sports. That includes wrestling, a Holy Cross stronghold for many years. 26 state championship teams will attest to Tiger dominance in the sport.

The Tigers are serving notice that they will be a player with the Division I powers immediately, including Brother Martin, Jesuit, Catholic, St. Paul's and Rummel.  Holy Cross whipped Rummel 59-20 in a dual meet in Metairie Wednesday night.

While Rummel wrestled with only three or four starters, the Tigers looked very good, winning 6-of-10 matches contested. Rummel forfeited the other four matches. Aaron Maddox, Dylan Mire, Austin O' Donnell and Ryan Hanley are all still active with the Raider football team, which faces Dutchtown Friday night in the 5A regional playoffs.

Highlighting the performance for Holy Cross were a pair of falls in the lower weight classes.

At 106 pounds, Beau Bush of Holy Cross pinned Rummel's Tucker Boesch in 1:25 while Dylan Soileau of the Tigers pinned Josh Duhon of Rummel in less than a minute at 113 pounds. Soileau finished fifth at 106 pounds in Division II at the state meet last season.

Rick LaCava of the Raiders scored a 23-7 victory over Nicholas Bonck of Holy Cross at 132 pounds. LaCava was a semifinalist at 120 pounds in Division I last season. Cody Lacoste, John Smith and Michael Darwin were other winners for Rummel.

Both Holy Cross and Rummel move on to compete at the Bulldog Duals at Fontainebleau this weekend.

Rummel, which won the Division I state championship in 2011, is ranked fourth in the Louisianawrestling.net preseason poll in Division I while Holy Cross, which won the Division III state championship in 2011, is ranked second in Division II.
