RAIDERS TOP ST. PAUL'S, HOST
Coming off of a good win in an event at St. Paul's, Rummel continued its early season success on the mat, capturing the annual George Trygg Memorial Tournament at Grace King Saturday among 17 teams competing from three states.
The Raiders won five weight classes and placed nine wrestlers in the top three finishers in the 14 weight classes.
Rummel champions included Tyler Mire (120), Matt Calcote (126), Joe Kerry (138), Tyler Frame (145) and Michael Darwin (170). Kerry was named Most Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament.
The Raiders finished with 187 team points with St. Paul's finishing second with 166.5 points. The Wolves had three individual champions, including Zach Clay (132), Dominic Lovenitti (152) and John Brands (182).
Host Grace King was third with 124 points and the Fighting Irish had three champions with Johnathan Davadi (113), Brandon Briones (160) and Maycol Rizo (285).
Belle Chasse finished fourth with 97 points and had a pair of champions in Logan Thompson (195) and Robert Kennedy (220).
John Ehret finished fifth with five finishers in the top four places in their weight classes.
The other individual champion was Christopher Marson of Denham Springs at 106 pounds.
Nine champions, including Marson, Calcote, Frame, Lovenitti, Briones, Brands, Thompson, Kennedy and Rizo scored pins in all three of their matches en route to titles.
When Rummel gets a few key wrestlers in upper weight classes from its football team, which plays for the 5A state championship this Saturday night, the Raiders could be the prime challenger to Division I favorites in defending state champion Brother Martin and Catholic High (Baton Rouge).
"I was really pleased overall," said Rummel coach Rod Cusachs. "Seeing our young guys step up and wrestle well and place in the event was a real plus. I feel good about our team right now and better when we get some football players back."
