BIG SATURDAY FOR RAIDERS, BEARS
While defending state champion Brother Martin remains the favorite to repeat as Division I champion in 2013, a pair of recent champions are in hot pursuit and looked the part of prime contenders Saturday.
In a battle of wrestling powers from different classifications, the higher classification program won out in convincing fashion.
2011 Division I state champion Rummel blasted defending Division III state champion Brusly, 66-7, in a dual meet Saturday at Brusly.
The Raiders dominated from start to finish, capturing 10 of the 12 matches contested while taking the other two by forfeit.
Scoring pins for Rummel were Robert Fairchild (106), Tyler Mire (120), Rick LaCava (132), Tyler Frame (145), Michael Darwin (170) and Austin O' Donnell (285).
In the feature match, defending Division I state champion Matt Calcote of Rummel handled 2012 Division II state runner-up Wyatt LeJeune 19-8 at 126 pounds.
Other winners for the Raiders included Devin Breaud (106), Tyler Mire (113), Cody Lacoste (152) and Tyler Troncoso (195).
The Panthers had a pair of winners in Kobe Mancuso (160) and Donald Johnson (220).
With Rummel's 5A state champion football team now finished, the Raiders are at full strength now on the mat. Rummel coach Rod Cusachs was pleased with his team's performance and feels good about the prospects moving forward.
"It is good to get out full compliment of wrestlers in the lineup," said Cusachs. "Seeing Austin get a pin was encouraging. He will score points for us this year. Aaron Maddox (182) did not get to wrestle (won by forfeit) but he will really help us.
Rummel also won by forfeit at 138 pounds.
At the Baton Rouge High Tournament, 2010 Division I state champion Catholic High easily outdistanced the field, scoring 268 points with Live Oak second at 188 points. East Ascension was third with 141 points. Catholic had seven winners in the 14 weight classes.
Winners for the Bears included Phillip Nauta (120), Matthew Mire (132), James Claitor (138), Kevin Moran (152), Brandon Luckett (160), Dillon Breaux (170) and Caleb Sutton (195). Mire was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
No other school had more than one champion.
Other winners included Christopher Marson of Denham Springs (103), Jake Bernard (113) of East Ascension, Cody Hill of Live Oak (126), Grant Godso of Redemptorist (145), Donnie Berg (182) of St. Michael's, Brandon Thongsavanh (220) and Brian Arnett (285) of Centerville.
