Brusly sets tone early on way to another title

Brusly High continued its run of wrestling dominance by
winning its 10th Division III state title in 11 years at the Louisiana High
School Athletic Association’s State Wrestling Tournament that ended Saturday
night at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.
It started with the Panthers winning the first eight weight
classes. Those win helped Brusly put the finishing touches on the title,
finishing with 343.5 points. De La Salle (176.5) was second and North Vermillion
(165) took third.

Austin Franklin won the 106-weight class and Kendon
Lee won the 113. Franklin defeated Ouachita Christian’s Matthew Matherne
while Lee defeated Thomas Jefferson’s Logan Griffin. Lee, a freshman, said he did not expect to win an
individual state title this season but hard work helped him get it. The Panthers’ most notable winner was senior Trevor
Schermer, who won at 152, notching his fourth individual title. Schermer
and his older brother, Austin, who graduated in 2012, are now the only
brothers to each win four individual titles in a career. Other BHS individual champions were Baret Sanchez (120), Wyatt LeJeune (126), Noah Landry (132), Toby Hebert (138), Koby Mancuso (145) and Dillon Prejean (195).

territory for Brusly coach Jimmy Bible. |
“It’s something we look forward to every year,” Bible said.
“This year, we have a real good team. We’re looking to come out and do some good
things, some big things, break some records, things like that. The kids
responded. They wrestled real well.”
Saying Brusly wrestled well seems like a bit of an
understatement, which Bible corrected.
“We’re on a pretty big roll right now,” Bible said.
