MOST VALUABLE WRESTLERS DIVISION III Alex Martin - De La Salle, Senior: Martin won the Division III state championship in the 160-pound weight class. It was Martin’s third consecutive state title after winning the 152-pound weight class as a sophomore and a junior. “Alex just works very hard every day at practice,” De La Salle coach Jacob Karl said. “He is just physical. He is going to go at you and he is not going to back down. He just wrestles you non-stop.” DIVISION II Kody Woodson - Archbishop Shaw, Senior: Woodson won his first state title, winning the Division II crown in the 170-pound weight class. He finished second in the 152-pound weight class as a sophomore and third in the 160-pound weight class as a junior before winning it all this season. “Kody started with us as an 8th-grader and he has always been a guy we have leaned on heavily the whole time he has been here,” Shaw coach Paul Hatty said. “He has won more matches than anyone in Shaw history.” DIVISION I Paul Klein - Brother Martin, Junior: Klein is The New Orleans Advocate’s Wrestler of the Year after winning the Division I state championship in the 132-pound weight class. He helped Brother Martin win its third straight title. It was also Klein’s third consecutive title after winning the 106-pound title as a freshman and the 120-pound weight class as a sophomore. “Paul is like having another coach out there,” Brother Martin coach Robert Dauterive said. “He cares about all the kids and makes everybody in the room better. He has been wrestling since he was 6 or 7 years old. He is the total package.”

Stephen Shields/Brother Martin, Freshman

Shields won the Division I state championship in the 106-pound weight class.

Mason Mauro/Brother Martin, Junior

Mauron won the Division I state championship in the 113-pound weight class.

Ben D’Antonio/Jesuit, Junior

D’Antonio won the Division I state championship in the 120-pound weight class.

Taylor Gambil/Brother Martin, Sophomore

Gambil finished second in the 126-pound weight class in the Division I state tournament.

Paul Klein/Brother Martin, Junior

Klein won his third consecutive Division I title, this time in the 132-pound weigh class.

Austin Meyn/Brother Martin, Senior

Meyn won the 138-pound weight class Division I title after a runner-up finish in 2013.

Rick LaCava/Rummel, Senior

LaCava finished third in the 145-pound weight class in the Division I championships.

Mason Williams/Brother Martin, Junior

Tanner LeBlanc/St. Paul’s, Senior

LeBlanc won the Division I state championship in the 160-pound weight class.

Jake Eccles/Jesuit, Senior

Eccless won the Division I state championship in the 170-pound weight class.

Yehia Riles/Brother Martin, Junior

Riles, runner-up in 2013, won the Division I title in the 182-pound weight class.

Kenderic Jones/Hahnville, Junior

Jones won the Division I state championship in the 196-pound weight class.

Rae Juan Marbley/Destrehan, Senior

Marbley, a Tulane signee in football, finished second in the 220-pound weight class.

Christian Ponson/Fontainebleau, Senior

Ponson finished second in the Division I 285-pound weight class, falling 4-3 by decision.

Coach of the Year

Robert Dauterive, Brother Martin

Dauterive led Brother Martin to its third consecutive Division I state championship. The Crusaders were 20-0 in dual meets and won seven tournaments. They also boasted wins over two state champions from Tennessee and the 11-time state champions from Georgia. It was the sixth state title for Dauterive, who also guided Brother Martin to a three-peat in 1999, 2000 and 2001 during his first stint at the school (’94-’01). This is the fourth season of his second stint. “This year was pretty special,” he said. “We did it with such a young team, and we return almost everybody.”
