Spartans, Rebels in top five

The high seeds enjoyed a very productive day one of at the record-breaking 38th Annual Ken Cole Wrestling Tournament on Friday at Comeaux High.

 

The tournament, which sports the most teams and wrestlers in the event’s history, featured only one top four seed in any of the 14 weight division get upset when Joseph Foret of Holy Cross knocked off No. 3 Jacob Chenevert of Live Oak at 113.

 

There were plenty of upsets in the final three seeds, however, including several pulled off by local wrestlers. As the first day ended, Brother Martin was in first place with 123.5, followed by Comeaux in second with 105.5, Holy Cross third (105), Brusly fourth (104) and Teurlings Catholic in fifth (102.5). Also in the top 10 locally was North Vermilion with 78.5 points.

 

Included among the seeded wrestlers doing well in Friday’s day one was most of the locals.

 

At 113, North Vermilion’s No. 4 Gavin Becker advanced with a pin and a decision.

 

At 120, Teurlings Catholic’s No. 4 Brock Bonin cruised with two pins, while Comeaux’s No. 3 Connor Stampley at 126 pinned two opponents. He’ll meet No. 6 Tristan Lee of Teurlings there this morning.

 

At 145, Teurlings Catholic’s No. 4 Dakota Hebert got a majority decision and a decision to roll into the quarterfinals. At 152, Comeaux’s No. 8 Jacque Girouard got a pin and a tight 6-5 win.

 

At 160, Acadiana’s No. 7 Eric Duhon got a pin and a majority decision to earn the right to challenge No. 2 Travis Quaterman of Brother Martin. At 170, North Vermilion’s No. 4 Brody Lemaire cruised twice, while teammate Colin Vaughn advanced as a No. 6 seed at 182.

 

At 220, Lafayette High’s No. 5 Rodrigo Diaz got a pin to advance, while Teurlings Catholic’s No. 7 Adam Garza got a pin and a decision to prepare to battle No. 2 Michael Yeatman of Holy Cross.

 

At 285, Northside’s No. 3 O’Shea Dugas didn’t disappoint with two quick pins, as did Teurlings Catholic’s No. 4 Travis Santiago.

 

The local wrestlers played a major role in the upsets of lower seeds. At 106, Comeaux’s Seth Oubre is now wrestling in the No. 8 spot with a pin and an injury default.

 

At 113, Carencro’s Daniel Trappey upset Comeaux’s No. 8 Hunter Fitch 11-6. At 145, Acadiana’s Benjamin Rogers upset Live Oak’s No. 6 Austyn Hodge in an 8-5 decision.

 

At 152, North Vermilion’s Colin Laird, who place third last year, will now meet the No. 3 seed after a 9-6 decision over East Ascension’s No. 6 DeQuan Jackson.

 

At 160, Teurlings Catholic’s Kynan Sonnier upended Benton’s No. l8 Jordan White 4-1. At 182, Comeaux’s Calvin Griffin beat Carencro’s No. 8 Austin Gary 12-6.

 

The home Spartans were at it again at 195 when Aaron Langlinais beat Pearl River’s No. 7 Jacob Spohrer.
