To the untrained eye, it may not be much of a surprise that Brother Martin won the team title in the George Trygg Invitational at Grace King Saturday, but what occurred 48 hours prior to competition does add another level of understanding why this team's victory had more of an impact.

The Crusaders took the team title with 317 points while Pearl River opened many eyes by coming in second with 133 points, ahead of St. Paul’s (121), De La Salle (94), and Dutchtown (89.5).

“I’m proud of the way we wrestled because we were on the road by 6 a.m. on Thursday to go all the way to Memphis for a dual meet, finished that night, and then found out about an ice storm,” Brother Martin Coach Robbie Dauterive said. “After we left, we got to Jackson at 2 a.m. Friday and then drove back to school later that morning. All things considered, I think we did a good job.”

Brother Martin’s Paul Klein, the champion in the 132-pound class, was selected as the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. Altogether, Brother Martin placed 13 wrestlers in the finals of the 14 weight classes, winning 11, including 106 (Steven Shields), 113 (Kyle Dunn), 120 (Ryan Genco), 126 (Taylor Gambill), 138 (Blaine Eisenhord), 152 (Mason Williams), 170 (Nick Comardelle), 182 (Travis Viener), 195 (Josh Tapia) and 220 (Jacob Clapp).

In the 120-pound class, Brother Martin’s Ryan Genco battled hard in the title match to defeat Pearl River’s Matt Mears.

“He was collaring pretty hard and made some mistakes, trying to head throw me,” Genco said. “I had to counter him for that because he was very strong.”

Alex Martin of De La Salle is pushing his way to the top of the 160-pound weight class, defeating top-ranked Tanner LeBlanc of St. Paul’s.

“He was coming at me pretty hard and I wasn’t ready for that,” Martin said. “So, I had to refocus and regain control to get the win.”
