There isn’t much data available that chronicles the participation of girls in the sport of high school wresting in the state of Louisiana, but to the naked eye, the numbers appear to be increasing.
Last weekend in the George Trygg Invitational at Grace King, four girls in different classes highlighted a talented field, including Sarah Williamson, Belle Chasse (182); Yondra Smith, South Plaquemines (120), and Abigail Nette (145) and Nicole Robichaux (106), both from Destrehan. Last season, Robichaux qualified for the state tournament while Nette finished with a 1-2 record this past weekend. Because of the relatively small amount of girls wrestling state wide, they must participate against boys while other states vary. While it might seem intimidating at first, Nette and her counterparts don’t seem to mind.
“I started wresting when I was six years old, and people told me I smiled too much,” Nette said. “In 2009, I started wrestling against boys with the Scorpian Club and I was undefeated that year. It was also my third year winning state, and I won girls nationals in 2011. Once people start watching a girl wrestle, they want to see it again. After I won my match this weekend, it felt amazing because I could hear the whole gym cheering.”
For Smith, the competition alone is a pretty strong motivating factor that she sees translating to other areas in her life.
“When people watch me on the mat and realize I’m a girl, they sometimes underestimate me,” she said. “It gives me a chance to show them I can do this.”
There are obvious differences in physical strength between the two sexes, but the desire to persevere and become stronger mentally are benefits parents of female wrestlers point out. |
