No matter how many consecutive years St. Paul’s has won the St. Tammany Parish wrestling tournament, each one holds its own special place in school history.

For the 16th consecutive season, the Wolves emerged victorious with 236 points, and it was by one of the slimmest as they survived a furious challenge toward the end by Fontainebleau, which was only eight points behind with 228. Rounding out the rest of the field was Mandeville (132), Pearl River (104), and Covington (62).

“I was proud of the way we wrestled, knowing we needed key points toward the end,” St. Paul’s coach Craig Kettleson said. “It was tough competition all the way around, and Fontainebleau was outstanding as well. They keep getting better.”

Another team which made a spirited run toward the end was Mandeville, led by the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler, Garrin Pelligirn, who defeated Mathew Rader of St. Paul’s in the championship of the 138-pound class by pin (4:50). As the two battled at a frenetic pace, Pelligrin, ranked fifth in the All-Area 138-pound class rankings, found that extra burst of strength.

“It was a hard match because I was coming off of major back surgery,” Pelligrin said. “This was a real good win for me and very emotional. It depended on quickness a lot, and sometimes it’s also about skill. Rader wrestled a good match.”

Two weight classes later, St. Paul’s got redemption in the 152-pound class when fifth ranked Sam Dufour pinned fourth-ranked Garrett Bauman of Mandeville in 2:13. Earlier in the season at the Mandeville open, Bauman had gotten the best of Dufour.

“When I went out there on to the mat, I knew it was going to be an intense match because of the way the crowd was,” Dufour said. “I fed off of the energy from their crowd. Since he’d already beaten me, I kept to my basics as coach Kettleson taught me, and it all just came together.”
