It’s still early in the season and no one is willing to concede the Division I state wrestling title to Brother Martin yet, but one of the first true barometers, the 12th Annual Trey Culotta Invitational, seems to be providing a glimpse of who could be champion at season's end.
After the first day of competition, the Crusaders are once again leading the pack in the team standings with a first to total of 310 points, followed by Vestavia Hills (Ala.) with 265, Cushing (Okla.) (222.5), Jesuit (211), Rummel (171), and East Ascension (164.5).
The final day of competition begins at 9 a.m. with an eight-man championship bracket in each of the 14 weight classes, with the finals scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
Brother Martin has five wrestlers seeded at the top of their classes going into the final day of action, including Mason Mauro (113), Taylor Gambill (126), Paul Klein (132), Austin Meyn (138), Pierce Williams (145), and Josh Tapia (195).
Other area wrestlers making in through the first day unblemished were Brody Martin, Jesuit (106), Steven Rumney, Brother Martin-unattached (106).
