Something had to give sooner or later.
Heading into the championship match of the 132-pound class of the Brother Martin-Trey Culotta Invitational, the Crusaders’ Paul Klein and Live Oak’s Cody Hill had yet to lose a match this season. In a battle of strategy and conditioning, it was Klein who emerged the winner with a 9-2 decision in a bout that could have an affect on seeding for the state tournament in February. For now, Klein is grateful for the win and just thinking about the next match in front of him.
“He’s been wrestling almost as long as me and has a lot of experience,” Klein said. “You’re not going to always get the pin, so you have to wrestle smarter and stay in good shape.”
In order to keep the 21-match unbeaten streak in perspective, the coaching staff has it all under control.
“I wrestle against my coaches and they keep me pretty humble,” Klein said. “The only one I have to be concerned about is the next one, taking it one match at a time.”
The Crusaders captured the team title by amassing 552 points, ahead of Vestavia Hills (Ala.), finishing runner up with 405. Jesuit scored 362 for third place, followed by Cushing (Okla.) (334), Rummel (258), East Ascension (236.5), Houston (Tenn.) (194.5) and Fontainebleau (190).
Dalton Campbell of Vestavia Hills (Ala.), the champion in the 220-pound class, was selected as the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. Campbell is undefeated so far this season in eight matches, seven coming in the tournament. |
While Brother Martin enjoyed capturing the team title, Coach Robbie Dauterive was quick to put it all in perspective when looking at the entire season. The thought of a third consecutive Division I state title isn’t even being discussed right now.
“I’m not even thinking about the state tournament right now,” Dauterive said. “We would struggle to win it right now. There is still plenty of wrestling to be done, and we need to improve in many different areas.”
