Lafayette-Lake Charles Notebook: Wrestling powerhouse Comeaux wins 13th consecutive parish championship

It may appear that Comeaux wrestling is an unstoppable force on the mat by looking at its resume of consecutive parish championships.

And one wouldn't necessarily be wrong with that analysis as the wrestling powerhouse extended its parish title streak to 13 with a 36-30 victory over Teurlings Catholic this weekend at the 2014 Greg Lavergne Parish Dual Championships at Carencro High. But for the second consecutive year the title didn't come easy for Comeaux.

After winning the championship on the final bout of its match against Teurlings Catholic last year, this year the Rebels gave Comeaux just as much trouble as the title was not decided until the second-to-last bout, when the Spartans took the lead and the crown to cap off an undefeated performance at the tournament.

The teams grappled with the lead throughout the match, passing it back and forth until Comeaux's Hunter Fitch, who was one of six Spartans to receive Outstanding Wrestler honors at the event, won his 113-pound bout to clinch the title.

“They would go up and then we’d catch them," Comeaux Coach Keith Bergeron told The Daily Advertiser. "We were finally able to build up a little lead going into final three rounds. We got it to where we just needed to win one of the last three and Hunter was able to do that for us.”

In the third-to-last match, Teurlings Catholic's Dwayne Thomas was leading when Alex Norris pinned him for the 220-pound weight class victory. Comeaux seemed on the way to a victory in the following match in the 106-pound weight class before Josh Hebert provided the Rebels with six points by pinning the Spartan.

The other five Spartans to receive Oustanding Wrestler honors was Conner Stampley (3-0) at 126 pounds, Dillon Romero (5-0) at 132, Jacque Girouard (5-0) at 152, Cabot Bellard (5-0) at 170 and Aaron Langlinais (4-1) at 195.

"In the match against Teurlings, five of the six seniors won and the sixth one wrestled a very good match" Bergeron said. "This group has come a long way. They've been working very hard to get to that next level.”
