Fontainebleau’s Christian Ponson did something no
Bulldog has ever done at the Louisiana Classics tournament in Baton Rouge — win
a title. Now the wrestler is ready to take on all challengers at the
Division I state tournament next month at the Pontchartain Center.

“This is amazing to be able to accomplish something like this,” Ponson said. “As far as the state tournament, anyone who wants a piece of me, they can come get me. I’m ready.”
Ponson's new found optimism came from his victory over Rummel’s Ryan Hanley in the 287-pound class, which made him the first person in school history to win an individual title at the prestigious Louisiana Classics.
The tournament format differs from the state tournament since each weight class is open to wrestlers in all three divisions. Ponson’s performance also solidified the school’s eighth-place finish, another first for the Bulldogs.
Ponson’s finish at the tournament could put him at or near the top in seeding for the 285-pound weight class.
Jesuit wrapped up the team title with 226.5 points, holding off Holy Cross, which was close behind with 209.5 points. Finishing third was Catholic-B.R. (178.5), ahead of Rummel (172), Brusly (151), Live Oak (110.5), East Ascension (99), Fontainebleau (95), St. Paul’s (80), and Sulphur (79).
“This weekend as a whole, I think our team performed very well,” Jesuit Coach Spencer Harris said. “We had 13 guys out there, and for the most part, everybody won the matches they were suppose to win.”
One of the reasons why the Blue Jays finished strong was Guy Patron, who had a dominant performance in the 184-pound class with a victory over Covington’s Brendan Allen.
“I wrestled Greco Roman and Freestyle over the summer and did very well,” Patron said. “I’d competed against a lot of taller people and won. He’s a very tough wrestler.”
Tanner LeBlanc of St. Paul’s took home the 162-pound title with a win over De La Salle’s Alex Martin in a battle which featured two of the tournament’s strongest wrestlers pound for pound.
“My strategy was to keep my right arm in because he likes to drag off of that arm,” said LeBlanc. “I wanted to aggressive, staying on the offense and taking some shots. In terms of people I’ve face this year, he’s definitely one of the best in the state for sure. He’s very solid and extremely strong.” |
