In the last 24 hours, the weather threatened to keep some teams from reaching the Greater New Orleans City Wrestling Championships at Holy Cross, but Mother Nature was in a forgiving mood and Holy Cross prevailed.

The Tigers took the team championship by compiling 276.5 points to outdistance Jesuit, which finished second with 196 points.

Although the field included 19 different teams, Holy Cross Coach Eric Desormeaux sees the tournament returning to its past glory, rivaling the city championships of the Baton Rouge and Lafayette areas.

“We are very excited to host the tournament,” Desormeaux said. “Right now, Baton Rouge and Lafayette are doing a good job to get all of their teams to come together and crown a champion. I want that same feeling for this tournament. We are already blessed with a number of great wrestling teams.”

St. Paul’s claimed third with 141 points, ahead of Rummel (100), Shaw (83), John Ehret (80), Hahnville (57), De La Salle (52), Thomas Jefferson (34) and Chalmette (32) to round out the top 10.

Holy Cross placed 11 wrestlers in the finals of the 14 different weight classes, winning eight, including Beau Bush (115), Dylan Soileau (122), Colin Guerra (128), George Benoit (134), Porter Dazet (184), Daniel Relayson (197) and Michael Yeatman (222).

Though the Tigers captured the team title by a wide margin, each weight class final proved to be an intense battle, including Guerra’s victory over Jesuit’s Jordan Giewat, a major decision (10-2). Both wrestlers were familiar with each other, and it was on Guerra not to have any lapses in concentration.

“All of the Jesuit guys study me and they know what I’m going to do and when I’m going to do it,” Guerra said. “It’s tough to work around that and do stuff you don’t normally do. Going against Jesuit and Brother Martin is always very tough, like a Chess match.”
