When the 2014 Louisiana State Wrestling Championships get underway Friday at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner, the best and brightest will be on display, and a majority are from the New Orleans metro area.

The tournament begins at 8 a.m., and concludes on Saturday.

Team and individual storylines from the area dominate the buzz, including Brother Martin’s quest for a third consecutive Division I team title. Hot on the tail of the Crusaders will be Jesuit and Holy Cross, as all three schools have wrestlers hoping to toss an obstacle or two in the way.

In Division I, the metro area has wrestlers among the top two seeds in 13 of 14 weight classes, while the Crusaders have eight among the top two. Making the move up from Division II after winning a state title is Holy Cross, having captured titles at the Division III and II levels.

In Division II, Live Oak from Baton Rouge will have to contend with Teurlings Catholic. Live Oak and Teurlings also boast a number of wrestlers seeded among the top two in each of the 14 weight classes, and could meet each other in the finals of many weight classes.

The heavy favorite to take the Division III title is Brusly, which has won the team title nine times in the past 11 seasons. Just recently, Brusly knocked off Division I power Catholic High of Baton Rouge for the Baton Rouge city title. Catholic had won the Baton Rouge team title 11 consecutive years.
