A wrestling program that boasts nine state titles over the past 10 years may easily grow accustomed to a certain recipe for success. Brusly, on the other hand, prefers to keep throwing spice into their gumbo.

With a first day total of 145 points at the 2014 LHSAA State Wrestling Championships at the Pontchartrain Center, the Bears are on track to claim their third straight championship.

The next closest school is North Vermillion with 93.5 points, followed by De La Salle (91.5), St. Louis (82), Basile (60.5), Lakeside (52.5), South Plaquemines (52.5) and Episcopal (47). John Curtis (45), and Evangel (40.5) complete the top 10.

Brusly has competitors in the semifinals in 13 of the 14 weight classes, which is a sure recipe for success as each wrestler has the ability to continue adding points to their team total. Despite the lofty achievements so far, Brusly coach Dan Bible continues to find ways to keep the team motivated and focused on the task ahead.

“We still have to go out there and wrestle the matches because we know we are going to get competition in our division,” Bible said. “There are different goals we give them to try and achieve whether it’s a scoring goal or a certain number of finalists. Changing it up keeps it very competitive for them.”

Doyline’s Brittany Bates, the second seed in the 106-pound class, reached the semifinals with two pins in two matches. Both of her pins occurred within one minute into the match. Her opponent in the semifinals is Brusly’s Austin Franklin.

Bates already has the best performance for a female in tournament history.

Last season in the state tournament, she won one of three matches. This year's regular season was her second straight with 40 wins or more.
