When Friday's LHSAA State Wrestling Championship matches ended Shaw was right in the hunt for a state title.

The Eagles were third with 106.5 points trailing Teurlings and Live Oak who had 139 and 122 respectively.

"Last year we left here in 13th place," Shaw Coach Paul Hatty said. "That was really low for us. Those guys came back and the work that they put in in the last 12 months — I don't know if anybody else has done it.

"We went from finishing 13th to talking about being in the thick of it."

Shaw doesn't want the talk to end there. The Eagles are hoping to end day two as Division II champion.

"We want to go out with a bang and win it all," said Shaw 145-pounder Bryce Ballas. "We had a bad year last year and this year we progressed so much that we could win it."

Ballas did his part and was one six Shaw wrestlers to reach the semifinals.

His teammate, Kody Woodson, who reached the semifinals in the 170-pound division credited the team's tough regular season scheduled for this year's state tournament showing.

The Eagles wrestled in the Catholic League during the regular season despite being in Division II. Other Catholic League members compete in Division I.

"A lot of the wins that we are getting today we've earned through out the season," Hatty said.

He said the key to completing the title run lies with the seven Shaw wrestlers looking to place in the consolation matches.

"If we can have all those guys in spot to place tomorrow we'll be right there in it," Hatty said.

Closing the gap on Teurlings and Live Oak won't be easy.

Teurlings has 10 wrestlers in the semifinals.

"We did one better than we thought we could," Teurlings Coach Kent Masson said. "We have four guys in the consolations that possibly have a chance to place so I think we are in a good place overall."
