Brother Martin might have faced a bit of adversity during the regular season, but it appeared to be little more than an afterthought as they captured its third consecutive team title in the Division I 2014 LHSAA State Wrestling Championships at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.

Having gone out of state in search of some of the best competition other states had to offer, it was key factor in the Crusaders’ victory that was clinched after Steven Shield’s victory over Hahnville’s Nicholas Lirette in the final of the 106-pound weight class.

Brother Martin finished with 312.5 points with plenty of distance from Jesuit (277). In third was Catholic-B.R. (216.5), followed by Holy Cross (204), Rummel (74.6), St. Paul’s (137.5), East Ascension (136.5), Comeaux (109), Fontainebleau (108), and Sulphur (107).

“What’s different about this one is that we set our sights on being undefeated state champions,” Brother Martin Coach Robbie Dauterive said. “We went out of state and wrestled some great teams, and we went against some great teams in Louisiana. We accomplished all of the goals we set for ourselves, and it’s a credit to how hard everyone worked.”

Comeaux’s Connor Stampley, the 126-pound champion, was selected as the Division I Outstanding Wrestler.

The Catholic League placed four teams among the top five while St. Paul’s and Fontainebleau gave the Metro area two more teams in the top 10.
