Teurlings Catholic garnered its third state wrestling title in four years when it claimed the Division II crown Saturday at the 2014 LHSAA State Wrestling Championships at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.
Standing out for the Rebels was their lone state champion, sophomore Brock Bonin, who won by technical fall against Jason Pitts of Parkway in the 120-pound championship match.
Not only did the Rebels win the title with only one title-winner, but they were able to pull it off while locked in a heated battle with Live Oak for the crown.
Teurlings Catholic entered Saturday with 10 wrestlers in the semifinals and a 17-point lead over Live Oak. Teurlings, however, went 3-7 in the semifinal matches and lost two head-to-head matches with Live Oak, which momentarily gave Live Oak the lead.
The Rebels, however, made up for it in the consolation matches and entered the finals with a 256-228 lead. Still, Live Oak had six wrestlers that advanced to the finals. Teurlings defeated Live Oak, 261.5-250.
Live Oak had four individual champions, but the one Teurlings individual champion got to celebrate a team title as well. |

“It’s awesome, but I am really more happy for the team,” Bonin said of his second consecutive title after winning at 106 pounds last year as a freshman. “I really thought we might win more than one individual title, but we had some bad luck.
“It was a little nerve-racking (the points tussle with Live Oak). Even before my match I knew it was tough and then after match I was nervous for the team.”
Teurlings Catholic Coach Kent Masson said a few more individual champions would have been nice, but his team did what it had to do to grab the trophy.
“We knew when we had 10 in the semifinals we would have 10 place,” Masson said. “We had three in consolation and the question was would they get in the placement round. They did a good job and helped put us in position to win. It really shows the value of a team.” |
STRONG FINISH:
Logan Thompson of Belle Chasse finished the wrestling season in impressive fashion.
Thompson won by major decision in defeating Kellan Lockhart of Sam Houston 8-0 in the Division II state championship match at 220 pounds. Thompson outscored his final two opponents by a combined score of 11-5. He defeated Willie Washington, Jr. of Northside in the semifinals.
