All Shaw wrestler Kody Woodson wanted in his senior year was for his team to place at the Division II state tournament.

The individual title he won in the 170-pound class? Well, that’s just, “icing on the cake,” Woodson said after defeating Grace King’s Aaron Maddox by pin in the final.

Shaw locked up third place Saturday in Division II at the 2014 LHSAA State Wrestling Championships at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.

The Eagles (190.5) couldn’t catch Teurlings Catholic (261.5) and Live Oak (250), who were locked in seemingly constant battle to claim the top spot (eventually won by Teurlings), but a third-place finish after finishing 13th last year gives Shaw something to build on.

Woodson’s victory followed a tough loss for teammate Bryce Ballas (145 pounds) and preceded another individual title for the Eagles thanks to Brennan Falcon’s win at 195.

Archbishop Shaw High School coach Paul Hatty celebrates with Kody Woodson after Woodson's win over Grace King High School's Aaron Maddox during the 2014 LHSAA Wrestling State Tournament at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner Saturday, February 22, 2014.

“This feels great, Woodson said. “There was point in the season that we didn’t know if we would have a full lineup for state because of sickness and injuries. All I wanted for senior year was a place at state.”

It was a fitting finish for the team leaders, Shaw Coach Paul Hatty said.

“Those kids were in the room when I walked into the Shaw a few years ago,” Hatty said referring to Ballas, Woodson and Falcon. “After last year I said to them while thinking ahead that we would be good next year and it turned out to be a great year.”

Teurlings entered Saturday with 10 wrestlers qualified for the semifinals. Though Teurlings finished with one state champion – Brock Bonin at 120 pounds – and Live Oak had six wrestlers make the finals, the Rebels finished as the state champions for the third time in four years.

At one point after the semifinal matches Live Oak had had erased a 17-point deficit in the team standings from Friday and had taken the lead. The Rebels retook the lead thanks to a strong showing in the third and fifth-place matches.

“It really shows the value as a team because we had enough kids place high enough,” Teurlings Catholic Coach Kent Masson said.
