Teurlings Catholic may have only left the 2014 LHSAA State Wrestling Championships on Saturday with one individual first-place finish, though it was the teams' collective performance that allowed the Rebels to bring home their third Division II state championship in four years.

After leading in team points after the first day of competition on Friday, the Rebels continued that trend on Day 2 as 13 of 14 weight classes placed to provide their 261.5 point total at the Ponchartrain Center in Kenner.

“When you talk about a collective effort and a true team unit, that’s what this was,” Teurlings Catholic Coach Kent Masson told The Daily Advertiser. “We always talk about the importance of wrestle-backs and that was the difference. It really is about balance. How you do in the wrestle-backs is so important.”

Brock Bonin was the Rebels' lone individual state champion as the 120-pound wrestler defeated Parkway's Jason Pitts by technical fall (17-2) in the championship match. Though it was Teurlings Catholic's team effort that provided the Rebels with their third team state championship in four years.

“It was a lot easier than I was expecting,“ Bonin told The Daily Advertiser. "It would have been nice to have a few more (state champions), but everybody picked up the slack.“

Winning Outstanding Wrestler for Division II was Comeaux's Connor Stampley, who won his first state title with a 5-4 decision over Brother Martin's Taylor Gambill in the 126 pound weight division.
