In his first three years at Live Oak, Cody Hill had already accomplished far more than most high school wrestlers ever dream of doing.

That didn’t stop the senior from breaking even more records in his final stand at as Eagle, earning him NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune’s Baton Rouge area Wrestler of the Year for the second straight season.

“Since it was a whole new year, you still have to think of it as all that other stuff doesn't matter,” Hill said. “It's a new slate, and you have to keep proving that you are the best guy in the state and that I can compete at the next level. It's just a new mentality and looking at it as a brand-new year and putting all that other stuff behind me."

Hill went on to win 76 matches this season – a new state record – bringing his career total to an astounding 243 wins, which sets another new mark in the state of Louisiana.

Included in those victories were Hill’s third city and state championships in a row, as well as a crown in the 128-pound class at the Louisiana Classic.

“I tried to improve a lot on top and bottom,” Hill said. “Definitely getting out faster and turning people more, scoring points from the top, and then moving around and being a lot more physical. Everybody definitely put in as much work as they can to beat me. Some people got the chance to do it this year. It's sad to say, but it happens.”

It didn’t happen often.

Hill’s 76 wins improve the previous state mark of 73 set by St. Paul’s Connor Campo, and his 243 career wins in four years pushed him well past Evangel Christian’s Matt Kimmel, who held the former record with 230 wins in a six-year span.

“It's pretty awesome,” said Hill, who began basic wrestling in the third grade. “Ever since my freshman year when I got 43 wins, people would say that I might have a chance to break the record. I said I don't know. That is a lot of wins. It's great to see how it pays off – all the hard work. When you get to break the record, it means a lot.”

Hill has done just about all a wrestler can do at the high school level, and now he’s ready for the college ranks.

Wrestling scholarships at the next level are few and far between, but Hill has certainly begun getting his looks. The three-time state champ is taking a visit to Pittsburgh this weekend, marking the first of what he hopes will be many official visits.

Hill is the headliner for the 2014 All-Metro wrestling squad, but he is joined by teammate Brody Bonura.

Brusly, which broke the LHSAA State Wrestling team points record by 0.5 points, features the most members on the All-Metro team with five, and Panthers coach Jimmy Bible was named the Baton Rouge area Coach of the Year for 2014.

Bible helped lead Brusly to its first city team title since 1998, dethroning Catholic-Baton Rouge’s 11-year run as champs.

“This was by far one of the best teams we’ve had here at Brusly,” Bible said. “We worked hard all year to win that City Championship, and I kind of knew we would be OK for the State Championship. Still, state championships are tough to win, but the competition that we faced during the year prepared us for that. A city championship on the other hand, we hadn’t won one of those since ’98. We knew at the end of last year that we were going to have a pretty good team. They all came together, and it was a special year.”

Brusly capped the season off by winning its third straight Division III team title with nine Panthers capturing individual titles in the tournament. Five of them made the All-Metro list, including Kendon Lee, Noah Landry, Trevor Shermer, Koby Mancuso and Donald Johnson.

Catholic High features four wrestlers on the All-Metro team in Josh Matthews, James Claitor, Matthew Mire and Matthew Moreau. Two wrestlers from East Ascension bookend the list with Alex Betteridge earning All-Metro honors in 106 and Connor Karwath at 285

Sean McManus from Zachary rounds out the group at the 195 class.
