It was a matter of just a few weeks after Brother Martin had won a third consecutive Division I title in the state wrestling championships that talk about etching a place in school history had already begun.
Never before had Brother Martin Coach Robert Dauterive coached a four -time state champion. Also, if the Crusaders capture the title again next season, it would be the third time in school history they've won four straight. The first streak of four titles was from 1984-87 and they won five in a row from 1999-2004.
Dauterive, the 2013-14 All-New Orleans Area Coach Of The Year, and Paul Klein, the 2013-14 Wrestler Of The Year, basked in the glow, but then broached the subject of what was once considered to be unreachable, and uncharted territory.
Klein, a three-time state champion with one more year left, received lofty praise from Dauterive, leading both to realize what is now attainable.
“Paul is the best wrestler I’ve ever coached,” Dauterive said. “He’s the most talented, the most competitive, and the consummate team player. When we lose him, it’s going to be like losing another coach. He’s the type of guy, that, if he wins a fourth state title, but the team doesn’t, it won’t mean the same to him. He’s that kind of person, a coach’s dream.” |
In three years of varsity competition, including a 44-1 record this past season, Klein has amassed 122 victories.
When Klein first arrived on campus, he made no secret of what his goal was, and it is now that much closer. “Winning my third title along with the third team title was an awesome experience,” Klein said. “Every one has its own special value.”
Right after Klein had won the 132-pound title, Dauterive exclaimed, “We’re six for six now! Let’s get two more!”
The significance being three team titles for the Crusaders and three individual titles for Klein.
The road to the championship had a few bumps along the way in the 2013-14 season when Brother Martin encountered medical issues which forced it out of competition for 10 days. At the latter point of the season, conditioning became a huge concern, casting some questions about being able to compete for a third consecutive title.
After coming out of the gate once again with two tournament victories, in the prestigious Ken Cole Classic in Lafayette and the St. Tammany Parish Invitational, plus convincing dual meet wins against Jesuit and Holy Cross, those who were doubters once again became believers.
“That was hard for us, and we weren’t at the top of our game coming back,” Dauterive, “but, it didn’t take us long. I’m very proud of the way our kids and coaches dedicated themselves to staying focused and working extremely hard to make this happen.”
The Crusaders are well represented on the first team All-New Orleans Area team with seven members, including Steven Shields (106), Mason Mauro (113), Taylor Gambill (126), Klein (132), Austin Meyn (138), Mason Williams (152), and Yehia Riles (182).
Jesuit’s Ben D’Antonio, the 120-pound Division I state champion, heads a list of two Blue Jays that also features Jake Eccles (170).
State champions also on the first team are Tanner LeBlanc of St. Paul’s (160), Kendric Jones, Hahnville (195), and Destrehan’s Rae Juan Marbley (220).
Three-time Division III state champion Alex Martin of De La Salle, the 160-pound winner, checks in on the second team.
