The Brusly High School wrestling team hopes to make its already crowded trophy case a little more cramped after this weekend.
BHS seeks to defend its Division III state championship in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association wrestling tournament at the Ponchartrain Center in Kenner.
A championship win this year would mark the 10th in 11 years for the Panthers, who have maintained a firm grasp on the honor. The 2011 meet marked the only year the Panthers did not win the title in their decade of dominance.
If seedings tell the story, Brusly could find itself in the drivers seat to keep the championship streak intact.
Seven BHS grapplers drew No. 1 seeds in the tourney – Kendon Lee, Baret Sanchez, Noah Landry, Austin Schermer, Dillon Prejean and Donald Johnson.
“We have a very good team with a lot of senior leadership, and we’re looking at a lot of big things and some big goals we want to fulfill,” BHS Wrestling Coach Jimmy Bible said. “I knew we’d have some high seeds, so things look good for us going into this meet.”
The Panthers head to Jefferson Parish on the heels of a win in the Baton Rouge City Tournament. It marked Brusly’s first win in that tourney since 1998.
“The kids are pumped up,” Bible said. “That was one of our goals to win the City Meet, and we practiced all year for that. We knew we’d do well for that, and the state tournament should take care of itself.”
Bible cites North Vermillion and St. Louis Catholic as the biggest challenges to the Panthers.
Opening round action begins at 9 a.m. Friday. Semifinal action begins Saturday at 9 a.m. The final will begin at approximately 6 .
