Several Brusly wrestlers, coaches, named to All-Metro team

Five Brusly High School wrestlers were named to the 2014 all-metro first team, headed by Division III Outstanding Wrestler Trevor Schermer.

The list, which was selected by Baton Rouge area coaches, lists Schermer as the BR area’s top wrestler for Division III and named Brusly coaches Jimmy Bible and Rodney Sutherland as coach and assistant coach of the year, respectively.

Among the first-team All-Metro wrestlers is Brusly freshman Kendon Lee – the only freshman on the list.

First Team:

• Trevor Schermer (54-3), senior – While competing in several weight classes, Schermer made the Metro team in the 152 lb. class after earning his fourth Division III championship in as many years, and his third City title, garnering a career record of 180-29.

• Kendon Lee (50-1), freshman – The only freshman on the First-Team list, Lee boasted a nearly perfect record on his way to first place finishes at the Division III state tournament and City tourney at 113 lbs.

• Noah Landry (52-8), senior – Earning first place finishes at the City tourney and Division III state championship, Landry earned a spot of the First-Teamers list in the 132 lb. weight class.

• Koby Mancuso (40-8), junior – One of four high school juniors to garner a spot on the First-Team list, Mancuso claimed top honors in the 160 lb. weight class in the Division III state championship and the City tourney.

• Donald Johnson (38-11), junior – The second of two Brusly juniors on the First-Team list, Johnson ended his season with a third place finish at the Division III state tournament in the 220 lb. weight class, but won the City tourney title.

Second Team:

• Wyatt LeJeune earned Second-Team honors while boasting a 50-11 record in the 126 lb. weight class.

• Dillon Prejean earned Second-Team honors for his outstanding season, with a record of 34-12 in the 195 lb. weight class.

Coach of the Year:

Jimmy Bible was named Division III Coach of the Year after leading the Panthers to their 10th Division III state championship in the last 11 years. He also led Brusly to their first City tourney title in 34 seasons.

Assistant of the Year:

Rodney Sutherland was named the Assistant of the Year for his part in helping the Panthers to their continued prominence in the wrestling circle, playing a key role in BHS’s successes in a stellar season that included championships in the City and Division III state tournaments.
