BRUSLY — Host Brusly High had nine wrestlers place in the top three paving the way for a team title at its own Brusly Invitational held Saturday at BHS.
Three competitors, Trevor Schermer (126-pound weight class), Austin Schermer (132) and Jacob Haydel (285), were individual champion, helping the Panthers score 199.5 points in the day-long meet that featured a number of teams from Division III-Classes 3A and below.
“I’m happy with how we competed,” Brusly coach Jimmy Bible said. “There are still some things we need to clean up and work on. But I think most teams came into this meet trying to get an idea where they stand, and now we know.”
Thomas Jefferson-Gretna placed second at 145, while Sulphur, the only Division I-5A team in the meet, was third at 140. John Curtis (122) edged Bossier (121) for fourth place at the 25-team meet.
Brusly’s Trevor Schermer took a 15-0 technical fall decision over Benjamin Kirkikis of Evangel Christian in the 126 final. At 132, Austin Schremer pinned Fisher’s Ian Navarre in 1 minute, 16 seconds.
Haydel closed out the meet by pinning Basile’s Nicholas Cortez in 3:31 to win the 285 title. Redemptorist’s Hunter Arnett was the area’s only other winner, taking 15-0 technical fall win over Basile’s Trenton Pelloquin in the 170 weight class.
Brock Serio (106), Baret Sanchez (113) and Kade Loupe (160) were Brusly’s second-place finishers. The Panthers got third-place finishes from Wyatt LeJeune (120), KJoby Matherne (138) and Quinton Doss (145).
Other local competitors to post second-place finishes were Redemptorist’s Grant Godso (145), Brandon Arnett (195) and Brian Arnett (220). Plaquemine’s Sterling Saylor (113) and Parkview Baptist’s Casey Spinks (126) were also third-place finishers.
